Continuing to keep the state on the boil ahead of the January 28 deadline on T, the Congress high command on Monday stumped the Seemandhra Congress delegation which is in Delhi on a Keep-AP-United mission by asking them why did they not oppose the separate state demand when it was incorporated in the Congress election manifesto. Forced on to the backfoot by the query from Union HM Sushilkumar Shinde, 40-member strong Seemandhra delegation claimed that the assurance of creating Telangana was in the 2004 election manifesto but not in 2009.However,Shinde went by the 2004 manifesto that was submitted to the Union home ministry by the state leaders before the Srikrishna Commission took up the matter.
In response to Shinde stating that the Congress has not gone back on its assurance on Telangana, the Seemandhra team spoke of the serious consequences of the division of the state including employees agitations, students unrest and water wars.At the end, however, all Shinde told them was that he would keep their views in mind while deciding on the issue. With their mission far from over, Seemandhra leaders are slated to camp in Delhi and meet more central leaders on Tuesday. The 40-member strong team consisted of ministers S Sailajanath,T G Venkatesh,Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, K Partha Sarathi,C Ramachandraiah,Vatti Vasanta Kumar,Ghanta Srinivasa Rao,Kondru Murali Mohan, Dharmana Prasada Rao,MPs R Sambasiva Rao,A Saipratap,KVP Ramachandra Rao,J D Seelam, MLAs,Gade Venkata Reddy,Mastan Vali etc.The team also included leaders of APNGOs of Seemandhra organisations of government employees.
Speaking to the media after meeting Shinde, minister TG Venkatesh said they had urged the home minister not to take any hasty decision without considering the views of Seemandhra leaders.Senior leader Gade Venkata Reddy said they argued as to why the state should not be divided.Division of the state is not the solution to the problems. We requested the home minister to announce special packages to all backward areas in Telangana and other regions, he said.Minister K P Partha Sarathi said even though they argued for keeping the state united, they would abide by the partys decision on the division of the state. Earelier in the day,the Seemandhra leaders called on AICC functionary Vayalar Ravi at his residence. However,Ravi told them that he would meet them on Tuesday as he was leaving for Kerala.Later, the team met senior leader Digvijay Singh, who advised them to meet party president Sonia Gandhi,vice-president Rahul Gandhi,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and home minister Shinde as they were the ones who would take the final call on Telangana. The party has conveyed its decision to Shinde. Now,it is for the top four leaders to decide, Digvijay told them. The delegation also met AICC treasurer Motilal Vora.On Tuesday, they hope to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad.
