In the backdrop of overwhelming support for the TRS in the recently-held byelections, the Congress leaders from Telangana have decided to negotiate with their Andhra counterparts to agree for the creation of separate Telangana state. The leaders think this would try to restore the image of the party in the eyes of the people of Telangana. All the party T-MPs,who met in New Delhi at the residence of Congress working committee member K Keshava Rao on Tuesday, are said to have entrusted the job to Rao himself. Rao is expected to meet not only the advocates of united Andhra Pradesh, but also the leaders from the Andhra like panchayat raj minister Botsa Satyanarayana who are for the division of the state.
Apart from all Congress MPs from Telangana,Union minister S Jaipal Reddy also attended the dinner meeting. The leaders reviewed the poll results, which according to an MP,were astonishing and unexpected. Its high time that the Congress leadership reviewed their approach to the Telangana issue.Because the way the people backed the Telangana cause in the recent elections will make it impossible for the Congress leaders from the region to stick to their political careers after December when the Justice Srikrishna committee is scheduled to submit its report to the Centre, an MP said. A social boycott of Congress leaders could not be ruled out,he said.To avoid such an eventuality, the Congress MPs from the region will try to convince our friends from Andhra region for a friendly division of the state,he added.
The sources said Keshava Rao will launch parleys with two sets of leaders from the Andhra region;those who want a status quo,and those who are ready for separate Andhra state. While the majority of the MPs from the region like Kavuri Sambasiva Rao,Rayapati Sambasiva Rao,Lagadapati Rajagopal, ministers D Purandeswari,A Sai Pratap,Ananta Venkatrami Reddy,K Rajamohan Reddy etc are for preserving the status quo, other MPs from the region like Chinta Mohan,G V Harsha Kumar and Union minister Panabaka Lakshmi are ready for a amicable division of the state. Keshava Rao will try to seek the help of separate Andhra leaders in order to convince the united Andhra leaders. He has already had consultations with Botsa and others, sources close to Rao told TOI.
