New Delhi/Hyderabad: In double trouble for the UPA government which has promised a forward movement on the Telangana issue in the first half of November,a veteran leader of the separate state cause and pioneer of the 1969 movement began a fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi even as a former minister in the Kiran Kumar Reddy cabinet sat on a similar protest in his native Nalgonda town. Both the protests were launched on Tuesday to coincide with the AP Formation Day festivities which is being viewed by the T votaries as a day of betrayal.Accompanied by several Telangana leaders,96-year-old Konda Laxman Bapuji, whose resignation from the then state cabinet triggered the 1969 agitation, began his fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar around 10.30 am while former T minister Komatireddy began his fast-unto-death for a separate state at Gandhi Chowk in Nalgonda town on Tuesday afternoon.
Backed by T-Congress MPs,TDPs Telangana Forum,Telangana Nagara floated by rebel TDP MLA N Janardhan Reddy,Telangana Praja Front led by balladeer Gaddar,Telangana Vimochana Samiti, Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) and trade unions such as INTUC,Bapuji began his fast by paying tributes to the T-vetarans who died in the fight for the separate state since 1969. All those present on the occasion called for a united fight under a Telangana flag.Speaking on the occasion, Bapuji urged the parties to come together and fight for the separate state with a single agenda.

T ministers main hurdle
Nalgonda: Before launching his indefinite hunger strike at Clock Tower here on Tuesday, former minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy performed puja at the local Anjaneya Swamy temple to seek blessings for his fast. After he sat for the fast along with thousands of his followers,Komatireddy thundered that it was Telangana ministers who were the major stumbling block and not Seemandhra leaders to achieving Telangana statehood.
Komatireddy, who resigned as minister last month to protest against the delay in formation of Telangana, said,I am ready to sacrifice my life for the cause of Telangana. There is no question of calling off the fast. He alleged that ministers from Telangana were the main hurdle to the separate state. The former minister said that he would continue his fast until the Centre announced a roadmap for Telangana state.

United T front with Bapuji in the lead mooted
According to sources, all the political parties having a stake in the T region are for a united front with Bapuji as chief minister of the new state.Confirming that such a move is on the cards,TDP leader Erraballi Dayakar Rao announced that the TDP T-forum was ready for such a united fight on the condition that Bapuji himself should lead it.However, the TRS,which is currently calling the shots in the region,is opposed to projecting Bapuji on the grounds that it will mar the chances of its president K Chandrasekhar Rao leading the state after it comes into being. Prominent among those present at the Jantar mantar fast venue were MPs Madhu Yashki,Balaram Naik (Cong),G Sudharani (TDP), MLAs E Dayakar Rao,Jaipal Yadav,M Narasimhulu (TDP),K Dilip Kumar (MLC),Nagam Janardhan Reddy, Harishwar Reddy,K Venugopalachari ( Telangana Nagara) and Vimalkka (Telangana Praja Front). Before launching his fast,Bapuji visited Raj Ghat and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
Meanwhile,in Nalgonda, hundreds of T supporters and leaders joined Komatireddy Venkatareddy, who quit as minister and MLA,when he began his indefinite fast for the separate state here on Tuesday. Displaying solidarity with him were Congress MPs K Keshava Rao,Ponnam Prabhakar, Gutha Sukhender Reddy,S Rajaiah,Manda Jagannatham and K Rajagopal Reddy.T Employees JAC leaders including K Swami Goud,Srinivas Goud and Devi Prasad were also present on the occasion.
The twin protests can spell trouble for the UPA government. While Bapuji has secured police permission to sit on a fast for a week, his frail condition may ensure that the authorities end it much earlier than that.In Nalgonda, Komatireddy has obtained 10 days permission to sit on the fast. We are monitoring the developments and will take appropriate action depending on how things unfold, said a senior police official.
