Hyderabad: Opposing the stand taken by the MIM on the creation of Telangana,a group of prominent Muslim personalities on Sunday called upon the community members to take a pro-active role in the agitation and fight for a separate state. The creation of Telangana, according to them, would go a long way in achieving the interests of the Muslims, economically as well as socially.
They were participating in a seminar on Bifurcation of state and minorities which was organized by the Syed Ghouse Khamooshi Foundation held in the city.
Most of them were quick to condemn the popular perception that majority of the Muslims were against separate state. The MIM is opposed to the creation of Telangana and has opted for Rayala-Telangana in its submission to the Srikrishna committee.
One of the speakers,Hamid Mohammad Khan, president,Movement for Justice and Peace,Jamaat-e-Islam,felt that even though the city has a significant Muslim population, their development was never in sync with the rest of the city. There are hundreds of IT companies in and around Hi-Tec City, but you can find very few Muslim employees there. Most of them are reduced to doing menial labour or are small time traders. The Sachar committee report has also revealed that the development rate of Muslims in Hyderabad is less than many other cities and is also one of the five cities in the country where the per capita income of Muslims is less than SCs,STs and backward castes, he said.
He also expressed confidence that if Telangana becomes a reality, then it would be the first state to implement the Sachar committee report.
Nusrath Mohiuddin,CPI leader, felt that the Urdu language had suffered post independence and a separate Telangana would help revive it.There were several madrassas before the formation of the state, but now most of them have closed down.Urdu is discouraged everywhere.Though it is the second language,it is hardly spoken in government offices nor is it allowed as a medium of instruction in professional courses.
Some like Mukharam Hussaini, president,Syed Ghouse Khamooshi Foundation, felt that this was a golden opportunity for the Muslims to do something for their future generations as they stand to benefit from this agitation. We need to prioritise our agendas and not just be pushed towards emotional issues. If a separate state is achieved then we can expect development of the community in every field, he said.
Syed Viqaruddin Quadri, chief editor,Rahnuma-e-Deccan,stressed on the need for forces fighting for a separate Telangana to warm up to the community members and gain their confidence on the issue.Muslims have time and again been the victims of indifferent attitude of the rulers and they have lost confidence in the system as they hardly benefit from any development activity.
Those present at the meeting included Aladdin Ansari, advocate,CPI leader Pratap Reddy and Amanullah Khan, auto drivers union leader.
