T-lawyers stir hits courts

Work in the AP High Court and the lower courts in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts was paralysed on Tuesday after advocates belonging to the T region intensified their agitation demanding a proportional share in the government postings in courts for the people from their region. In high court, while most of the courts did not sit for the day in view of the agitation, those of Justice CV Nagarjun Reddy and Justice N Rammohan Rao were disrupted by the striking advocates when they attempted to hold their sessions. According to eye witnesses, some furniture in the court of Justice Nagarjuna Reddy was also damaged by the protesters.  The protesters also reportedly indulged in altercations with those opposing the shut down and also roughed up some advocates from the other regions when they resisted the strike. The strike was total in the Nampally, Ranga Reddy and Secunderabad courts on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the state government on Tuesday started responding to issues raised by the agitators in more than one way.First,it announced that the cabinet subcommittee looking into the alleged injustice to the T region would hold a meeting on Wednesday.Secondly,it appointed Vinod Kumar Deshpande,a Telangana advocate,as the states new public prosecutor.Deshpande,a native of Adilabad,is currently practising in the AP High Court and had also worked as a judge in the lower judiciary earlier. In other developments, Advocate General D V Sitarama Murthy along with HC advocates association president D Prakash Reddy and Bar council member Rajendar Reddy met minister J Geeta Reddy and briefed her about the situation. Weve also given a chalo high court call to advocates in all the T districts for Wednesday, T Sriranga Rao of the Telangana advocates JAC told TOI.

Reality check for TRS - Wary Of Hurting Minorities, Party Not To Celebrate T Liberation Day

Chastened by Muslims - who form a sizeable chunk of the population in Telangana region, the TRS took a U turn on Tuesday and said that henceforth,it will not refer to September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day.This because it is perceived to be anti-Nizam and also it is much to the discomfiture of the Muslim community.
After a meeting of top TRS leaders including president K Chandrasekhar Rao and minority leaders on Tuesday, the party decided that September 17 will henceforth be observed as Telangana Merger Day with the Indian Union. The TRS has now cancelled the celebrations scheduled at the party headquarters and districts on September 17, TRS politburo member Mahmood Ali told TOI.The TRS has also decided to drop its demand that the state government officially celebrate the day as Telangana Liberation Day,he added.

The main reason for the cancellation of celebrations planned at Telangana Bhavan, the party headquarters, and in districts is due to the objections raised by Muslim groups and organisations. They argued that the celebrations will hurt the sentiments of the minority community as it would be tantamount to stating that the Nizams rule was against Hindus and other faiths. In reality, the Nizams respected all religiouns equally, Mahmood Ali said.Analysts while welcoming the move wondered why the TRS had earlier not figured out that celebrating September 17 would hurt the Muslims whose support would be crucial for the Telangana state cause. Political parties including the TRS and the BJP have been celebrating September 17 as Telangana Liberation Day to commemorate the accession of the Nizams Hyderabad state to the Indian Union after the last Nizam surrendered before the Indian army in 1948. The TRS has been celebrating T Liberation Day by hoisting Telangana flags at Telangana Bhavan since the party was formed. From now on,the TRS said it would drop the word liberation. It will only pay homage to Telangana martyrs at Martyrs Memorial and recall the services of freedom fighters on September 17,the senior leader said.

According to sources,KCR said at the meeting on Tuesday that the Telangana Liberation Day would be observed or celebrated only after the bifurcation of the state.Till then,September 17 would be observed as Telangana Merger Day, the TRS chief said and added that it was the Nizams who had developed water resources and drainage system in the Hyderabad region. But realpolitik too has played a major role in the TRS changing its stance on the T Liberation Day.Muslims constitute about 70 lakh of the 4 crore Telangana population, which translates to about 16 per cent of the total population in the region. It makes sense to align with them rather than the BJP, said a TRS leader.

With the change of strategy, the TRS will disassociate itself with the BJP which has been demanding that the state government celebrate T Liberation Day officially for a long time.In the recent bypolls, the BJP had supported the TRS in the 11 constituencies that it contested while KCR campaigned for the BJP candidate in Nizamabad Urban.
