With Congress high command announcing an ex gratia of Rs one lakh to the families of those who allegedly died of shock or committed suicide following the death of former chief minister YSR last September, now TRS too planning to join the bandwagon and extend monetary help to families of students who committed suicide during the agitation for separate T state since last November. TRS and Telangana political JAC have started exploring possibilities to mobilise funds for the purpose. JAC chairman M Kodandaram told TOI that JAC was planning to conduct musical night/star night or star cricket match in November to raise funds. It is estimated that about Rs 5 to 7 crore would be required to provide financial help to 500-plus families who lost their family members during Telangana movement. While about 300 committed suicide,200 others died while participating in T movement,he claimed.
A senior TRS leader told TOI that immediately after the Congress high command announced decision to extend financial help to the bereaved families on Tuesday,TRS head office was flooded with phone calls from several district party leaders suggesting that they too should do something for those who died for separate T state cause. Some of the leaders proposed that TRS should urge the Centre to announce a special package to help the families but it was rejected by majority including party chief KCR on the grounds that it could trigger more suicides and the issue would be politicised by other parties.
