Clashes between activists and police continued today at the Osmania University campus even as a 48-hour bandh began here and in all 10 districts of Telangana demanding separate statehood for the region.
Police used teargas shells as scores of pro-Telangana students pelted stones at the police station located at the University campus, East Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Y Gangadhar told. "The pro-Telangana activists, staging a demonstration in front of the Osmania University police station, started hurling stones on police personnel from different directions following which the police retaliated by using tear gas shells to disperse the activists," the officer said.
Earlier, at least 120 pro-Telangana activists including members of the ABVP and Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) Convener M Kodandaram were arrested near Tarnaka area adjacent to the University campus when they took out rallies in support of the bandh. Demanding the release of arrested students and Kodandaram, protesters staged a demonstration before the police station in the University premises and also raised slogans seeking withdrawal of police forces from the campus. To intensify the agitation for separate statehood for the region, the JAC is observing a bandh today and tomorrow in all 10 districts of Telangana region. Pro-Telangana students had yesterday repeatedly clashed with police at the Osmania University campus and in different parts of Hyderabad after they were not allowed to march to the Assembly

Telangana demand raised in Lok Sabha
The demand for a separate Telangana was today raised in the Lok Sabha by several Congress members from Andhra Pradesh. Immediately after the Question Hour, the members including Ponnam Prabhakar and M Jagannath were on their feet seeking to raise the issue. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy tried in vain to pacify them and at one point was seen consulting party chief Sonia Gandhi. Backing their demand, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said that a bill for formation of the separate Telangana state should be brought in the current session itself and her party would help in its passage.
There was no response from the government on her plea. The members were pacified when Speaker Meira Kumar assured them that one of them would be given a chance to raise the issue. Incidentally, some Congress members from Andhra Pradesh had disrupted the Presidential address yesterday by raising pro-Telangana slogans. They had displayed pro-Telangana banners and shouted "Jai Telangana" and "We want Telangana".

Normal life came to a standstill in parts of Andhra Pradesh Tuesday as a 48-hour shutdown began to demand a bill in parliament for the formation of a separate Telangana state. Transport services in Hyderabad and nine other districts of the Telangana region were paralysed while shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed. Buses of state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) could not come out of the depots since early Tuesday as the shutdown called by Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) evoked a total response across the region.
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other pro-Telangana parties and groups are participating in the strike while the Communist Party of India (CPI) is backing it. TRS activists took out rallies in different parts of Medak, Nizamabad, Warangal and Karimnagar districts to force the closure of shops. Police arrested TRS legislator Harish Rao in Secunderbad when he was leading a motorcycle rally.
The shutdown call evoked partial response in Hyderabad. While RTC suspended all its services to different parts of Telangana and also to Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, it was plying few services in the city. Educational institutions in the state capital declared a holiday as a precautionary measure. Shops and business establishments were closed in some areas while the shutdown had not much impact in other areas.
The coal production in state-owned Singareni Collieries Company came to a halt as about 70,000 employees joined the Telangana strike. The production in the coal mines spread over four districts of Adilabad, Khammam, Karimnagar and Warangal was affected.
