T stir paralyses GHMC services

With nearly 10,000 employees of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation participating in the non-cooperation movement, civic services have been paralysed for the past three days and the civic body suffered revenue loss to the tune of near Rs 10 crore. The staff in all 18 municipal circles and 5 zonal offices have been boycotting their duties as part of noncooperation movement demanding introduction of the Telangana bill in Parliament. About 8,000 permanent employees and 2,000 contract employees have been participating in the movement. With this, all wings of the corporation were forced to close down. The GHMC officials, who are on duty, have not been attending for grievances from public during visiting hours. Since February and March are crucial months for collection of taxes, the GHMC gets Rs 2-2.5 crore daily as property tax.Similarly,Rs 1-2 lakh trade licences fee and Rs 2-5 crore building fees and the rest from other charges like mutation fee.

"GHMC is now getting about Rs 20 lakh revenue, mainly from eSeva centres that collect property tax,"a GHMC official said. Officials are worried over the Joint Action Committee threatening to extend the noncooperation movement to emergency services from February 23.As of now, sanitation and health wing workers have been exempted from the protest.
