The Chalo Assembly call given by Telangana activists triggered sporadic violence in various parts of the city on Monday with the rampaging students and advocates torching the railway reservation centre at Necklace Road MMTS station and portions of a MMTS bogie near Jamai Osmania railway station. As usual, the Osmania University campus turned out to be the nerve centre of the days protests with the students indulging in pitched battles with the security personnel throughout the day.Till late in the night, the stone-pelting from both sides and lobbing of teargas shells from the cops continued near B hostel after the latter entered the campus premises in order to bring the situation under control. In all,at least 300 teargas shells were burst and nine students and eight securitymen hurt in the OU unrest.
The day began with about 500 OU students gathering outside Arts College around 11.30 am with the intention of marching to the assembly where the budget session was on.At about the same time, scores of advocates too proceeded towards the assembly from various points in the city. While heavy police deployments around OU campus and strict traffic restrictions and security around assembly prevented the protesters from reaching their target,it did not stop the violence that was unleashed in between. As the OU students rally reached the second cordon of security near NCC gate after crossing the main gate, several of them were arrested and bundled into waiting vans. After a mild lathicharge, students retreated and attempted to break out of the campus from the Adikmet side near Ladies Hostel. With the students resorting to stone-pelting,cops responded with teargas and caning.Several students were arrested at this spot too.Even as the standoff continued, around 1 pm,a few students sneaked into the Jamia Osmania railway station and managed to torch one bogie of an MMTS train. However, only a couple of seats got burnt while in the ensuing lathicharge,a few glass panes of the train got smashed.
