TELANGANA TANGLE - Cong,PRP MLAs from Seema for united AP
Hyderabad: Legislators from the Rayalaseema region belonging to Congress and Prajarajyam on Wednesday decided to submit a common memorandum to the Srikrishna committee favouring united Andhra Pradesh. However,J C Diwakar Reddy,a Congress MLA from Anantapur district, sprang a surprise by proposing that the region should go with Telangana in case thedivision of the state was inevitable. The region would suffer if it goes with Andhra region.Issues like water sharing will hit if the division of the state takes place, he said. Ealier too,Reddy raised a demand by proposing that Anantapur should go to Karnataka.Talking to the media,T G Venkatesh, the man behind the meeting, admitted that entire Rayalaseema would fight for the united Andhra Pradesh. As far as preserving the status quo of the state,we (leaders of different political parties) are one.We will submit a single memorandum to the committee, he said. Admitting that opinions differed on the future of the region in the divided state, Venkatesh said the issue was not discussed in todays meeting. Some people want to go with Telangana while other want Greater Rayalaseema. This is not the issue before us now. This will be discussed when need arises, he said.Venkatesh, however, said the MLAs would meet again on March 18 to finalise their report on the collective stand of Rayalaseema.
There were no takers for the Rayalaseema merging with Telangana as proposed by Diwakar Reddy. The proposal was opposed by Bhuma Sobha Nagi Reddy,a PRP MLA from Kurnool district, who said it was not practical.Rayalaseema should fight for the unity of the state. It was Rayalaseema which stood to lose by agreeing for the united Andhra Pradesh in 1956.The region lost the capital an irreparable loss as a state capital in the area would have transformed the region by now. So,fighting for the preservation of Andhra Pradesh is the right of the people of Seema, she told TOI.TDP,even though invited for the meeting, kept itself away saying there was no unified voice in the Congress. There is no consistency in the stand among the Congress members. Some are for Greater Rayalaseema, some want Anantapur district to go with Karnataka, and some want to merge with Telangana after the division of the state. So,we do want to send out such conflicting views to the people, said K E Krishna Murthy,TDP MLA and former minister from Kurnool district.
