Prez Pranab on T-rouble shooting mission

Hyderabad: After decades, a President landed in Hyderabad to be the chief guest at the passing out parade of IPS probationers at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy. While many were wondering why President Pranab Mukerjee agreed to take the salute at the Dikshant Parade of the 65th batch of IPS probationers here on Tuesday,an event that has seen home ministers grace the occasion in the recent past, sources said the main mission of the First Citizen of India was to calm the frayed tempers on the contentious Telangana issue and meet the leaders from both sides of the divide in Hyderabad rather than wait for them to come to Delhi and call on him at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

According to the sources, that was the reason why the President gave a patient hearing to the various groups that called on him at the Raj Bhavan to where he had driven straight from the Begumpet airport after landing in the city on Monday night. Those who called on him include YSR Congress president Jaganmohan Reddy,a delegation of Seemandhra TDP leaders and a group of Telangana Congress leaders. The President wanted to assess the mood and calm tempers ahead of what could be a historic and perhaps bitter bifurcation that is likely to unfold in the coming days, said the sources.

To all those who called on him, irrespective of whether they were for or against the division,Pranab had the same words to say: The Constitution of India is very clear on the subject and I am bound by the advice of the Union council of ministers. While hinting that he would not be able to stop the bifurcation of the state if such a recommendation comes to him from the Manmohan Singh ministry,Pranab is said to have made it clear that as President of India,he would not allow injustice to be done to any region or part of the nation.

Prez visited city to assess T situation
Hyderabad: The significance of Pranab making it to the Dikshant Parade in Hyderabad can be gauged from the fact that not many old-timers could recall when was the last time the President took the salute at the passing out parade of IPS probationers at the National Police Academy here. While a few recalled that Presidents Fakruddin Ali Ahmed (in the mid seventies) and Shankar Dayal Sharma (in the mid-nineties ) graced such occasions in the past, others said that then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had taken the salute in the mid-eighties when Giani Zail Singh was the President.Presidents,Prime Ministers and home ministers can be the chief guest. But it has been a long time since the President consented to come for the event. We think that this was the ostensible reason for the visit with the real one being something else.It looks like Pranabs visit was to take stock of the Telangana situation and cool the frayed tempers, said the sources.
