With the NCP announcing its support for Telangana, the Congress is now chanting a new mantra : We are for Telangana but need more time. Less than a week after AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad negated Union home minister Sushilkumar Shindes deadline and said a decision on the separate state demand needs more time, central leader Vayalar Ravi on Friday put up the impression that the Congress is serious on Telangana but would not commit as to when a decision would be taken.
A high level meeting on Telangana will be convened on or before February 20, Vayalar Ravi told the media. The party will be able to give more clarity on the T- issue after holding crucial meetings with chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana,he said. However, the AICC functionary was not willing to commit a time line for the meeting to end and a decision to be announced. The consultation process is being taken up at various levels. It needs more dialogue and wider discussions. Therefore,I cannot fix a time frame.Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is the Congress's in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, would be able to throw more light on it, he said. Ravi also claimed that home minister Shinde had never said that a decision on Telangana will be taken by the Centre by January 28.We never discussed the date. The Telangana issue is still under the discussion stage and I cannot tell you how long it will take, he said.
Meanwhile,Union civil aviation minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh also urged the Centre to clinch the Telangana issue as early as possible.
