T-stir : Govt to drop cases against students

The state government has set in motion the arduous task of withdrawing cases booked against students who participated in the Telangana and Samaikyandhra agitations. Chief minister K Rosaiah gave his consent to this on Friday after a high-level meeting with home minister Sabita Indra Reddy,DGP K Aravind Rao and former home minister K Jana Reddy. The home minister told the media that there were nearly 1,171 cases registered against 5,374 students across the state for damaging public and private property and indulging in arson and riot. She said the government would take corrective steps soon after getting a nod from the legal department regarding these cases. We are sincere in our efforts, she said.

Government sources, meanwhile, said the entire exercise by the state police department would take a minimum of two months as all cases would be examined on a case-tocase basis.Though the government had asked the police department to take a look at all cases afresh, sources hinted that cases booked for damaging private property were unlikely to be withdrawn. Former home minister Jana Reddy said cases that were already under judicial scrutiny would take more time than other cases.Telangana and Samaikyandhra leaders, cutting across party lines, have been demanding withdrawal of all cases against students. Some Telangana MPs even petitioned to Union home minister P Chidambaram urging him to use his good offices to influence the state government to drop cases booked against agitating students.
