TUGHLAQS TELANGANA - MULK-I-TILANG

The term Telangana was first used about 700 years ago by Delhi sultan Ghayasuddin Tughlaq in 1324 CE and later by his son Mohammad Bin Tughlaq in 1325.Coins minted by them had the words Zarb Mulk-i-Tilang (stuck in the land of Telugus) inscribed. The Delhi sultans, while minting coins, used Tilang (in a corrupted form) to refer to Telugu-speaking people to celebrate their victory over the Kakatiyas in Warangal
This is the fi rst epigraphical or material evidence for the term Telangana.Though there were rulers in Warangal, they did not refer to the land as Telangana. The Delhi sultans were the first to coin the term Telangana to denote a geographical area represented by people speaking Telugu
The second material evidence came when Bahmani sultans issued orders appointing their governor in Telangana in 1364 CE.Sultan Quli Qutub Shah, who was appointed governor of Telangana in 1495 CE later declared independence and formed the Qutub Shahi dynasty in 1518 CE
Some historians believe that the term Telangana came from the trilinga desa or the land of three famous Shiva temples at Srisailam in Kurnool,Draksharamam in E Godavari and Kaleshwaram in Karimnagar district. But this analogy refers to a vast area that now represents Andhra Pradesh
