Tollywood lampoons Telangana lingo
Heres a typical scene from a Tollywood flick. Villain Jayaprakash Reddy plans to loot a bank. He shares his plan with his yes man. Criminals nalla dressullesukuntaru gadha, anna (Dont criminals wear black clothes, brother), the sidekick asks, predictably in Telangana lingo in the movie Blade Babji. This evokes a chorus of laughter in the cinema hall. Released in 2008, the movie became a hilarious hit but at the expense of the image of Telangana. In a scene set in a police station in the same movie, a ruffian who reduces himself to a buffoon also speaks in the Telangana dialect. If you thought this was before the T agitation intensified and that now things are better, then think again. In Maro Charitra, released just last month, an actor speaks in Telangana dialect to be simply funny. The character played by Venky repeats the phrase Dinaam (Everyday) in his dialogues. The word is so overused that it sounds funny and it appears that it is intended to poke fun at the Telangana lingo. Gangsters who suffer the ignominy of being beaten up black and blue continue to be the Telangana ilk.And Mahesh Babus heroism in his last release Athidhi manifested in beating up a challenger who speaks the Telangana lingo. Sadly, filmmakers are continuing to misuse the Telangana lingo. Unfortunately, those who do it hardly realise that they are hurting the sentiments of Telangana people, said director Nimmala Shankar.
Miffed by all this, TRS leader K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) called for a boycott of all films made by Andhra producers.I won accolades for my acting talent in my college. There are many good actors in Telangana who can act in films which respect the Telangana sentiment, he said. KCRs daughter Kavitha went a step forward leading an attack against the Telugu film industry leading to disruption of shooting of several films.Films with stars like NTR Jr, Allu Arjun, Ram Charan Tej and Vishnu were also not allowed to be screened. The industry may have been put on the back foot as a result of these attacks Ravichander but the change that Telangana votaries have been demanding over the last few years is yet not visible. It is for purely commercial reasons that characters speaking the Telangana lingo are included in films by directors, said wellknown director V Sagar Reddy. As president of Telugu Film Directors Association Sagar Reddy, however, said filmmakers should not portray characters in such a way as to hurt the sensibilities of one particular section of people. That is for the record but a Telangana character to be insulted or made fun of is a must in Telugu films. Little wonder that T activists have now mooted the idea of pure Telangana films. A movie titled Dhoom Dham is being made with Telangana folk singer Gorati Venkanna singing his heart out. Much as Telangana votaries want more movies on Telangana, it has not been easy for director Shankar to find a producer for his proposed movie on the Telangana agitation. Committed to his idea,he finally got some like-minded people to join him in producing the film.Hailing from Nalgonda district,Shankar intends to select 64 new artistes, including hero and heroine from the region. Yes, the Telangana lingo will be dominant in the film. But unlike in other movies,it will not be made fun of, Shankar said. Hope it clicks at the BO as well.
