T stir paralyses GHMC services

With nearly 10,000 employees of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation participating in the non-cooperation movement, civic services have been paralysed for the past three days and the civic body suffered revenue loss to the tune of near Rs 10 crore. The staff in all 18 municipal circles and 5 zonal offices have been boycotting their duties as part of noncooperation movement demanding introduction of the Telangana bill in Parliament. About 8,000 permanent employees and 2,000 contract employees have been participating in the movement. With this, all wings of the corporation were forced to close down. The GHMC officials, who are on duty, have not been attending for grievances from public during visiting hours. Since February and March are crucial months for collection of taxes, the GHMC gets Rs 2-2.5 crore daily as property tax.Similarly,Rs 1-2 lakh trade licences fee and Rs 2-5 crore building fees and the rest from other charges like mutation fee.

"GHMC is now getting about Rs 20 lakh revenue, mainly from eSeva centres that collect property tax,"a GHMC official said. Officials are worried over the Joint Action Committee threatening to extend the noncooperation movement to emergency services from February 23.As of now, sanitation and health wing workers have been exempted from the protest.

Fight for Telangana: Over 2 lakh govt employees boycott work

Hyderabad: More than two lakh government employees of Telangana will boycott work from today as part of their non-cooperation movement launched to mount pressure on the state and Central govt. to grant statehood to Telangana. Pro-Telangana parties have asked them not to cooperate with the rest of Andhra Pradesh from today and ensure no work takes place in the region.

``They would go to the office, sign in the register but they would not work. They would absolutely declare non-cooperation. They will not work for this government which is against the interest of the people of Telangana,'' said Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader, KT Rama Rao.

Sources say some of the commandments issued to the government employees include not paying electricity and water bills, not paying property tax and travelling in buses without buying a ticket. Some say advocates have been asked not to argue their cases before judges from the other two regions. At a later stage, the plan is to even ask sanitary workers to stop lifting garbage, making Hyderabad and other towns in Telangana stink.

But the state government is prepared and has its own plan in place. It says it will outsource staff to tackle the 'boycott movement'. ``They should do this for a day or two, but not for long as that will cause inconvenience to the people who are committed to the cause of Telangana,'' said Andhra Pradesh Textiles Minister, P Shanker Rao.

Sources say the TRS also plans to disrupt the Governor's address on the opening day of the Budget Session in the Assembly.
