DS gives thumbs down to T development council
This is what Srinivas communicated to them when they asked him to head the proposed council, sources close to the former PCC chief told TOI.Srinivas has been regularly summoned by the party high command for inputs on the vexed Telangana issue and in the past week alone, has met party president Sonia Gandhi thrice.
In response to the council proposal,Srinivas has reportedly told the central leaders that such a move will not help the Congress much and can in fact go against it and give further fodder for the TRS to sway the electorate in its favour.Only the granting of a separate state or the promise of a separate state within a specified time frame would be beneficial for the Congress. This was the view expressed by DS to Sonia, they said.
According to the thinking in Delhi, one reason for the hesitation in announcing the separate state is the uncertainty whether the Telangana Congress leaders can upstage the TRS and ensure that the Congress reaps the electoral dividends of the granting of the separate state. At this point, the TRS has managed to identify itself with the popular Telangana sentiment. The high command will go for the separate state only if it is convinced that the decision will help the Congress. At this juncture,it looks like they are not, said the sources.
Allaying their fears,Srinivas reportedly assured them that if given the leadership task,he will ensure in the post-Telangana scenario that a new and strong political base for the Congress is created in all the three regions with the active support of the more than 60% weaker sections comprising SCs,BCs and minorities.
That the Congress is serious on Telangana was reiterated by newly appointed AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Tuesday. When an MP from the state called on him in Delhi in the afternoon,Digvijay made it clear that a positive decision on Telangana is on its way in the next few days. However, there is no indication as to what the positive development will be.
